Office Ceilings that Transform the Workplace Experience

December 4, 2024

Whether it’s Zaha Hadid’s SKY PARK offices in Bratislava, Slovakia or Gensler’s refurbishment of the iconic ARK in London, England, see how workplaces have creatively overcome structural challenges to create remarkable office ceilings and optimise the acoustic performance of their spaces.

Whether in the form of ceiling tiles, acoustic baffles, or acoustic islands – or a combination of various elements – office ceiling design dramatically contributes to the interior vision of a space. It is the room's fifth wall, after all.

Beyond its role as a major focal point, the office ceiling is central in addressing two critical aspects of office acoustics: speech intelligibility and comfort in open-plan areas, as well as speech privacy in meeting rooms. This is key since disturbances such as nearby conversations and activities can be detrimental to employee focus, and more so in open-plan layouts where noise travels far, wide, and in all directions.

From a monolithic expression at the L'Oréal Group headquarters in Paris, France to acoustic baffles at WPP's large-scale Manchester campus, explore office ceilings around the world.

Aker Tech House

Oslo, Norway

As part of their design vision for the Aker Tech House office building in Oslo, the architecture firm Wingårdhs were looking to create a space and accompanying office ceilings that would reflect the entrepreneurial tech energy of the tenants. Rockfon Color-all ceiling tiles in the Mercury develop a contemporary grey ceiling design. "The surface of Rockfon Color-all in Mercury is slightly metallic and shiny, and we think it gives a tech feel to the build. It's also darker and reflects less light than the standard white solution, which gives the ceiling a pleasant heaviness. It grants a certain calmness to the premises when compared to white ceilings", say Wingårdhs.
